Role Summary

The Senior Designer is a category expert responsible for leading and executing product designs from concept to production, ensuring alignment with Macy’s aesthetic and commercial goals. The role includes setting fashion direction, mentoring teams, and driving innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Director of Design on trend and category research and market analysis
  • Establish seasonal fashion direction and ensure consistent aesthetic integrity
  • Research and interpret seasonal trends, fashion direction, and cultural influences
  • Develop and execute strategic vision based on customer needs, sales, and profit objectives
  • Lead product design from concept to production and supervise the design team
  • Select fabrics, materials, colors, patterns, and trims with Director/Senior Director
  • Ensure alignment with product strategy, SKU plans, and assortment strategies
  • Partner with Materials and Product Development teams to achieve cost and fabrication goals
  • Lead fit sessions and communicate fit standards with Tech Design and Product Development
  • Create cohesive product presentations for cross-functional teams
  • Incorporate sales performance and customer feedback into future designs
  • Meet seasonal timelines and action calendars
  • Represent Macy's at industry events and foster relationships with vendors and colleagues
  • Serve as main contact for vendor community and communicate with overseas offices
  • Collaborate with omni-channel partners to align development direction
  • Anticipate obstacles and provide solutions, context, and rationale in decision-making
  • Foster a collaborative environment and develop high-performing design teams
  • Encourage innovation, resilience, and process improvement

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field
  • 5-7 years of industry experience
  • Advanced design skills and expertise in designated category
  • Proficiency in Illustrator, Photoshop, PLM, Microsoft Office, and Excel
  • Strong leadership, team development, and motivation skills
  • Experience in trend analysis and strategic design
  • Excellent color, print, and technical sense
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Adaptability and resilience in fast-paced environments
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule based on company needs
