Role Summary
The Senior Designer is a highly skilled designer and category expert responsible for leading design teams and driving the brand's seasonal direction, while demonstrating strong leadership and strategic vision.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Director of Design on trend and category research, analyzing the retail market.
- Establish brand's seasonal fashion direction to ensure consistent aesthetic integrity.
- Research and interpret seasonal trends and cultural influences, sourcing inspiration from various outlets.
- Develop and execute strategic vision prioritizing customer needs and business objectives.
- Lead design team through product design from concept to production.
- Collaborate on fabric and material selection processes.
- Interpret, select, and approve color palettes, patterns, materials, trims, and styles.
- Align designs to overall product strategy and SKU/assortment plans.
- Partner with Materials team on seasonal palettes and fabric optimization.
- Work with Product Development to ensure cost guidelines and vendor allocation.
- Lead fit sessions with Tech Design and Product Development teams.
- Prepare product presentations to communicate design concepts to merchants.
- React to product selling performance and customer feedback for future designs.
- Adhere to timelines and calendars for timely execution.
- Maintain industry presence to foster connections and represent Macy’s.
- Build relationships across technical, merchant, and sourcing divisions.
- Serve as primary vendor contact and communicate line development direction overseas.
- Collaborate with Omni partners for online development alignment.
- Anticipate obstacles and seek solutions, providing context and rationale.
- Practice clear communication and make confident decisions.
- Foster collaborative and inclusive environment across the organization.
- Develop and motivate engaged design teams, nurturing talent.
- Encourage risk-taking and innovation while tracking team development.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and mentor others.
- Demonstrate resilience, tenacity, and high energy.
- Foster acceptance and respect for authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in related field.
- 5-7 years of industry experience.
- Advanced design skills within designated category.
- Strong leadership and team development abilities.
- Ability to conduct trend and market analysis.
- Creative vision aligned with brand’s aesthetic.
- Strategic thinker with customer and business focus.
- Proficient in color, print, and seasonal interpretation.
- Technical proficiency in Illustrator, Photoshop, PLM, Microsoft Office, and Excel.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Adaptability and resilience in complex environments.
- Able to work a flexible schedule based on company needs.
