A fast-moving technology startup focused on geospatial data solutions.
Job Title: UX Designer
Company Overview: Atreides helps organizations transform large and complex multi-modal datasets into information-rich geo-spatial data subscriptions that can be used across a wide spectrum of use cases. Currently, Atreides focuses on providing high-fidelity data solutions to enable customers to derive insights quickly.
We are a fast-moving, high-performance startup. We value a diverse team and believe inclusion drives better performance. We trust our team with autonomy, believing it leads to better results and job satisfaction. With a mission-driven mindset and entrepreneurial spirit, we are building something new and helping unlock the power of massive-scale data to make the world safer, stronger, and more prosperous.
Team Overview: We are a passionate team of technologists, data scientists, and analysts with backgrounds in operational intelligence, law enforcement, large multinationals, and cybersecurity operations. We obsess about designing products that will change the way global companies, governments and nonprofits protect themselves from external threats and global adversaries.
Team Principles
At Atreides, we believe that teams work best when they:
Remain curious and passionate in all aspects of our work
Promote clear, direct, and transparent communication
Embrace the 'measure twice, cut once' philosophy
Value and encourage diverse ideas and technologies
Lead with empathy in all interactions
Responsibilities
Design and rapidly prototype user interfaces for geospatial intelligence platforms, OSINT analytics tools, and mission-critical data systems
Build click-through demos with design tools as well as functional prototypes HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks (React, Vue, or similar) to validate designs before full implementation
Collaborate with product managers and directly with end users (intelligence analysts, military operators, government clients) to understand workflows and pain points in operational environments
Create and maintain design systems that scale across multiple products whilst remaining flexible enough for rapid iteration
Work embedded with engineering teams to ensure designs are technically feasible and can be implemented within sprint cycles
Design for complex data visualization scenarios including large-scale geospatial datasets, temporal analysis, and multi-source intelligence correlation
Build user interaction mapping tests and maintain user observability tools.
Iterate rapidly based on operational feedback, system performance constraints, and evolving mission requirements
Document design decisions, interaction patterns, and component specifications in a way that engineering teams can implement without constant clarification
Design and document user behavior flows and work with stakeholders in data engineering and customer-facing roles to ensure user SOPs remain up to date with these flows.
Conduct lightweight usability testing with actual users in operational contexts, adapting methods to suit classified environments where necessary
Balance aesthetic quality with functional requirements, understanding that clarity and speed often trump visual flourish in mission-critical systems
Required Qualifications
3+ years of professional UX design experience with a portfolio demonstrating shipped production software
Proficiency in modern design tools (Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD) with demonstrated ability to create high-fidelity prototypes
Working knowledge of front-end development: HTML, CSS, JavaScript sufficient to build functional prototypes and communicate effectively with engineering teams
Experience designing for data-intensive applications (dashboards, analytics platforms, business intelligence tools, or similar)
Proven ability to work at pace in fast-moving environments where requirements evolve based on user feedback and operational demands
Strong communication skills with ability to articulate design decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders
Portfolio demonstrating end-to-end design process from problem definition through to shipped product (include before/after examples, rationale for decisions, and measurable outcomes)
Experience conducting user research in constrained environments (remote testing, limited participant availability, or similar)
Eligible to obtain security clearance (citizenship and background requirements vary by location)
Desired Qualifications
Experience with React, Vue, or similar modern JavaScript frameworks
Background in defence, intelligence, law enforcement, or other high-consequence operational environments
Experience designing geospatial interfaces (mapping applications, GIS tools, satellite imagery analysis)
Knowledge of data visualisation best practices for temporal analysis, network graphs, and multi-dimensional datasets
Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA minimum) and designing for diverse user capabilities
Experience with design systems at scale (multiple products, distributed teams)
Understanding of API design and how back-end constraints impact front-end experiences
Experience with user behavior and observability tools like Posthog, Pendo or Amplitude
Active security clearance (Secret or Top Secret level in Australia, Canada, United States, or Five Eyes equivalent)
Contributions to open-source design systems or front-end frameworks
Experience designing for real-time collaborative environments (multi-user systems, operational dashboards)
Compensation and Benefits
Competitive salary
Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance plans
Flexible hybrid work environment
Additional benefits like flexible hours, work travel opportunities, competitive vacation time and parental leave
While meeting all of these criteria would be ideal, we understand that some candidates may meet most, but not all. If you're passionate, curious and ready to "work smart and get things done," we'd love to hear from you.
