What makes a great desktop wallpaper from a design perspective?

Desktop wallpaper design has an unusual brief: the design must be visually interesting on its own but also function as a background for arbitrary interface elements, desktop icons, and window chrome. The wallpaper competes with everything on screen, so designs that win are typically those that create visual interest in the periphery without fighting for attention in the center where content lives. Understanding the actual usage context — not just how the wallpaper looks in a portfolio mockup — is the core design challenge.

How should resolution and aspect ratio be handled in wallpaper design?

Professional wallpaper design requires delivering at multiple resolutions: 1920×1080 (FHD), 2560×1440 (QHD), 3840×2160 (4K), and 5120×2880 (5K for Retina displays). Mobile wallpapers add vertical portrait orientation requirements at 390×844 and 360×800. The safest approach is designing at 5K and delivering downscaled versions, plus verifying the composition reads correctly with the standard OS dock, taskbar, or home screen icon grid overlaid.

What compositional rules make wallpapers work alongside desktop UI?

macOS places the dock (60–80px) at the bottom and menu bar (25px) at the top — designs with strong focal elements in these zones compete with system UI. Mobile home screens place icons in a grid covering most of the lower two-thirds. Effective wallpaper compositions push visual interest toward the upper-center while maintaining visual weight at the bottom that the UI chrome overlaps. Seamless or gradient-heavy designs avoid these issues entirely — a solid textured background without dominant focal points works universally across any icon or window layout.
