What is an onboarding screen?

An onboarding screen is one of the first screens a person sees after installing an app or signing up. Its job is to get them to the first useful moment with as little effort as possible. Most flows mix three kinds of screen: a welcome that says what the app does, setup steps that collect what the app needs, and a short tour of the main features.

What makes a good onboarding flow?

Good onboarding is short and lets people leave it. Show the value before asking for an account. Ask for one thing per screen. Request permissions such as notifications or location at the moment the app needs them, with a sentence on why. Show progress when there are more than two steps, and always offer a way to skip.

How many onboarding screens should an app have?

As few as the product can work with. Three to five screens is common in consumer apps, and many products now replace the intro carousel with a guided first task inside the real interface. If a step does not change what the user sees next, it can usually wait.

Where do these onboarding examples come from?

Nearly all are screens from shipped apps documented by Mobbin, with a few concept flows from Layers. Muzli follows more than 200 design sources and lists up to 60 matching pieces on this page, favouring recent work.
