During the past decade, we’ve written about hundreds of books featuring artists, movements, stories of vibrant creativity, attempts to correct the art historical record, and fascinating dives into science and history. Because of the resounding response to this coverage, we’ve decided to go even deeper this year by launching Colossal Reads, a monthly newsletter. What makes a good sign up page?

A good sign up page asks for as little as possible and makes the next step obvious. An email and a password, or a single sign-on button, is enough to create most accounts. Everything else, such as a name, a company or preferences, can be collected once the user is in.

Should sign up use social login or email?

Offer both when your audience uses both. Consumer products usually lead with Google and Apple and place email below. Business tools lead with work email or single sign-on. Whatever the order, show the same options on the login page, so returning users can find the method they used.

How should password rules be shown?

Show the rules before the user types and tick them off as they are met. Add a show-password control in place of a second confirmation field. Check each field when the user leaves it, with a message that says how to fix the problem.

Where do these sign up examples come from?

Most are sign up screens published on Layers, with sign up flows from shipped apps documented by Mobbin and pages from live sites. Muzli follows more than 200 design sources and lists up to 60 matching pieces here, favouring recent work.
